Youth Coaching

As parents we want to support our children’s personal growth, while helping them reach their full potential. However, there are times when our children may struggle to open up to us, preferring to confide in someone outside the family. This is where youth coaching can be a great alternative to traditional counselling.

As a life coach, teacher, and step-parent, I provide young people (Grades 3-12) a safe space to express their thoughts and concerns. My goal is to help our kids explore what truly matters to them, and how they can navigate their journey forward in life. Youth coaching combines educational and mentoring elements, recognizing that children often need additional support to thrive in their ever-changing environments. Youth coaching focuses on empowering our children to discover their strengths, set goals, and find their place in the world.

FAQ

How are you going to hold a 1-hour conversation with my child when I can barely get them to tell me how their day went?

I often engage younger children through hands on activities: drawing, storytelling, creative writing exercises, etc. to get them talking about their feelings and what’s happening in their world. If their hands are busy, it maintains their attention and usually opens up conversations.

With older teens who are shy or reluctant to talk, one strategy is getting them to speak to broader topics about their generation (which reflects how they feel),  during the trust building stages. I can also tap into their creativity to explore what's going on for them.

What kind of time line can I expect?

I like to work with my clients once every 2 weeks. Depending on their needs, it can take a few months or longer which is why I encourage you to purchase a package to secure a lower price. We will work towards reducing the frequency so your child can feel more confident on their own.

What if my child is resistant to seeing a youth coach?

If your child is unsure, I can offer a trial session so they can see if they like it. When a child/teen feels they are being forced against their will, they are less motivated to talk about their issues and less likely to change. If I can’t get your child talking, I won’t charge you for the session.

Is youth coaching similar to counselling?

As a coach my focus is on the present and how to help your child move forward in the future. Although youth coaching often has therapeutical effects, it is not a substitute for traditional therapy. If your child is struggling with mental health issues, I would encourage you to seek a clinical counselor (I can offer recommendations).

Confidentiality: can you tell me what is being discussed during your sessions?

In order for me to gain trust with your child, I need to assure them I won’t discuss what they have told me—they are however, certainly welcome to share anything they feel comfortable with. The only exception is if I suspect your child is in immediate physical or psychological danger, I will notify the parent/legal guardian.

Please note: in order for your child to participate in youth coaching services, I require consent from a parent or legal guardian. If there are two parents/guardians who share custody, both must be aware of their child’s enrolment.
